Mediterranean Cruises

The Mediterranean has it all and is the most popular cruise holiday choice amongst Brits. Whether you have visited the region once or a hundred times there is always something new and exciting to discover. The most difficult choice to make when picking your Mediterranean cruise is whether to go East, West or Central, no matter which your choice though a 14 night adventure awaits you. The Mediterranean offers ports of call including Civitavecchia which is the port for Rome, Barcelona, Palermo in Sicily, Dubrovnik in Croatia and even the stunning coast line of the French Riviera.

Mediterranean Ports

This is the gateway to the ancient city of Rome. The port of Civitavecchia is roughly one hour away from Rome so a guided tour or reliable transport to and from your ship is advised. Whilst in the ancient city everything is within walking distance of each other. Your first stop should be the famous Colosseum. Here you can partake in an outside walk around where picture opportunities are available along with numerous stalls selling souvenirs or you can pay a small fee for entry into the Colosseum itself. Rome is also home to Vatican City, another must visit place on your Rome to do list. Entrance into St Paul's Cathedral is advisable but be sure to arrive early to avoid lengthy queues in what can sometimes be extremely uncomfortable heat. Please not you must cover your knees and shoulders to enter here so take a light jacket with you. Once explored why not also check out the Trevi fountain, Spanish steps and the Pantheon where you can enjoy a small glass of local beer in one of the squares many bars.

Spain's most popular port of call for cruise ships and a bustling city. Your ship will dock close to the main shopping street which is Las Ramblas. Here you will find dazzling street displays and artists along with interesting little stores and a rather larger market. The market however can be easily missed so be sure to keep your eyes open. You will find the entrance to your left hand side nestled in between stores and a small road. Once you enter you are greeted by stalls of every kind from fresh meat to the most delicious sweets. The Marina in Barcelona is also worth a look whilst heading back to your ship.

French Riviera

The French Riviera is the place to be and to be seen. Cannes is one of the most beautiful places here and offers you the chance to shop like the stars. Usually a tender port you will exit the mariner and if it is designer boutiques your heart desires then keep to your right once you exit the car park. Enjoy a pleasant stroll along the mariner front and you will in no time come to the world famous casino. Continue on a little further and you have now reached designer heaven. There are fantastic world famous art deco hotels lining the sea front along with an extensive range of bars and restaurants. Nestled in amongst them you will find the stores of of Chanel, Dolce & Gabanna, Emporio Armani, Jimmy Choo and Dior just to name a few. A short ride on the little train is also recommended, this 45 minute or so journey will take you right through the heart of Cannes and is also fitted with an internal radio device which gives details on the area's history and heritage. Please note a child over the age of 12 will be charged an adult fare. You will find the train stops regularly just outside the entrance to the mariner where you will return to join your ship.

Located in Croatia Dubrovnik is one of the most prominent tourist destinations on the Adriatic and boasts fine weather year round. The Old Town is both pretty and worth exploring, you will find delicate crafts as well as some nice restaurants where you can sample fresh local seafood. The medieval city of Dubrovnik is rich in culture and heritage and unlike some other destinations you really need not venture too far from your ship to find them. Within walking distance you will find the Church of St Blaise, The Sponza Palace and the Bell Tower and Fountain of Onofrio.

Gibraltar has become a firm favourite with British cruisers and is more a shopping stop than anything else. Here you can buy items for a fraction of the price you would pay back home. Popular buys include sunglasses, watches, electrical equipment and perfume. As Gibraltar is part of the UK the currency is pounds and Euros however you may often find it is cheaper to pay in pound sterling and save your Euros for other ports of call. If shopping is not to your taste then why not take a trip to the famous Rock of Gibraltar. Here you can experience stunning views across the region and even see as far as Morocco just off the coast. As we all know Monkeys are a common sight on the rock but they are also very cunning little creatures. If you do embark on a trip to the rock we would advise you leave all jewellery on your ship and ladies please be sure to have your bag zipped up and in front of you at all times. Simply hang on to your valuables because they are notorious for snatching things of which you are most likely to never see again.
