Alaska Ports

Glacier Bay

Glacier Bay National Park is home to some spectacular scenery and some of the biggest glaciers in Alaska can be found here. Spanning over 3 million acres in total, many of the tidewater glaciers actively calve, and it is an amazing sight to see these huge chunks of ice crashing in to the water. The varied landscape provides the perfect habitat for a variety of different birds and hump-back whales, seals, mountain goats and bears are a common sight.

Hubbard Glacier

At seventy-five miles long, The Hubbard Glacier is the longest tidewater glacier in North America. It is also one of the most active glaciers in Alaska and it continues to advance towards the Gulf of Alaska. The wall of blue ice can be seen from some distance as it rises nearly 300 feet in to the air.

Tracy Arm Fjord

Tracy Arm is located within the Tongass National Forest of Alaska. On either side are vast cliffs of granite where hundreds of waterfalls are created by the melting snow. The highlight of the fjord is the Sawyer Glaciers that sit framed by snow-capped mountains and are regarded by many as the most beautiful glaciers in Alaska.

Ketchikan

Nestled between mountains and water, many of Ketchikan's buildings are propped up on wooden stilts connected by boardwalks, and a stroll through Creek Street with its quaint boutiques is a must. A visit to the Totem Historical Centre not only reveals that the city has the largest collection of totem poles in the world, but explains the history and legends behind these colourful poles. Ketchikan is often referred to as the salmon capital of the world because of its history as a fishing village, and there are lots of trips available that give you the chance to go fishing before heading inland to sample your freshly cooked catch.

Juneau

As a former gold-mining town, Juneau is steeped in history. Gold enthusiasts can try their hand at gold panning at Gold Creek, or take a tour around the Gastineau Mill where you can learn about the town's mining history. Juneau also boasts some spectacular scenery and wildlife such as hump back whales, eagles and sea lions. Nature lovers will want to take a trip over to Admiralty Island which is not only very beautiful but also has the largest population of brown bears of anywhere else in the world.

Skagway

At the height of the gold-rush Skagway was known as the 'Gateway to the Klondike' and although the miners are long gone, the remnants of that era still remain today. The rustic boardwalks and frontier-style bars and saloons are part of the Klondike National Historical Park, and a look inside them reveals all sorts of interesting artefacts. No visit to Skagway would be complete without a journey on the White Pass railroad. At over 3,000 feet above sea level, the views from the White Pass Summit over the surrounding mountains and glaciers are truly spectacular.
